DEI Work

  • Disability and Accessibility at NPR Employee Resource Group — Co-founder, January 2023

    Co-founded NPR’s first disability and accessibility employee resource group with NPR producer Audrey Nguyen. The goal of the ERG is to build and support disabled journalists, producers, editors, and staff at NPR through internal policy changes as well as education on disability reporting.

  • NPR’s Disability Editorial Style Guide — Contributor

    Contributed to NPR’s internal, editorial style guide for reporting on disability. Other contributors include Joe Shapiro — NPR investigations correspondent, Audrey Nguyen — NPR producer, Rhitu Chatterjee — NPR health correspondent, Emily Abshire — NPR digital platforms and curation producer.

  • 2023 Neon Hum Media’s Editors’ Bootcamp, January 2023 - March 2023

    Selected to be 1 of 6 participants in a multi-week story editing training program for narrative podcasts. Participants edited early drafts of scripts and mixes under the guidance of Executive Editor Catherine Saint Louis and guest instructors including Emanuele Berry of This American Life, Ruxandra Guidi of Bone Valley, Marlon Bishop of Anything for Selena, and Phyllis Fletcher of Terrible, Thanks for Asking.

  • 2020 Edward R. Murrow Award, October 2020

    Contributed editing to Hidden Brain’s “The Ventilator: Life, Death And The Choices We Make At The End which won an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association for “Excellence in Writing.”

  • 2020 AIR New Voices Scholar, August 2020 - December 2020

    Selected to be 1 of 20 scholars for a program aimed at connecting and supporting diverse audio-makers

  • 2018 AIR Full Spectrum Storytelling Intensive, December 2018

    Selected to be 1 of 15 participants in a weeklong podcast and audio storytelling training program

  • NPR Training: When covering disability, avoid ableist tropes like the ‘pity trap’ — Contributor, February 2023

    Contributed to a training video about covering disability and the language we use in disability reporting.

  • Science podcasting: From idea to episode — Panelist, July 2022

    Asked to speak on a panel about science podcasting for the DC Science Writers Association (DCSWA). Topic: how do you develop an idea — or kernel of an idea — into a podcast episode or entire series. Other panelists include Jacob Pinter for Overheard at National Geographic, Jennifer Weingart for AirSpace podcast from the National Air and Space Museum, and Maryam Zaringhalam for Story Collider. Panel moderated by Sam Jones of the American Chemical Society.

  • NPR Training: Sourcing — Moderator, July 2022

    Moderated a panel discussion on sourcing with NPR Training and NPR Science Desk. Topics: why you need a solid source base, how to find sources and maintain relationships with them, and how to keep it all ethical. Panelists include Mose Buchele — KUT’s senior correspondent, Shannon Bond — NPR business correspondent, and Neela Banerjee — NPR senior supervising climate editor. Training was available to journalists at NPR and NPR member stations.
